AIX 2023: ZIM Presents a New Economy Seat Family

AIX, Hamburg, 9 June 2023 – ZIM Aircraft Seating GmbH presented a new Economy seat family at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg from 6 to 8 June 2023. Designed in three sizes, it covers the entire configuration spectrum: all common aircraft types as well as short-, medium- and long-haul routes. It is the second trade fair appearance in a row at which ZIM has shown a new product in Hamburg: last year it was an Economy seat for short- and medium-haul routes.

A family instead of individual products
The series is designed in sizes S, M and L. The approach behind it is scalability. Instead of creating a separate design for every route length and aircraft type, the family relies on a common platform that can be adapted across configurations. For airlines, this shortens the layout phase; for ZIM, it reduces certification effort and the number of variants in production. Lightweight design remains the guiding principle: every kilogram saved has a direct effect on fuel consumption and emissions over the lifetime of the aircraft.

A trade fair that confirms the recovery
AIX 2023 was the clearest confirmation yet that the cabin industry has put the pandemic behind it. More than 13,000 visitors came to Hamburg, and the number of airline buyers in attendance was around 59 percent higher than the previous year. For suppliers, that is the decisive metric: airline buyers show up at a trade fair when cabin programmes are actually budgeted.

Premium Economy at the centre of discussions
Two topics dominated the discussions at the stand: sustainability and the expansion of Premium Economy. The two are connected. Airlines are looking for cabin solutions that increase revenue per square metre while reducing weight. ZIM's product development is positioned precisely in this area of tension.

Context
The appearance comes at a time when order backlog and capacity planning at ZIM are converging again. The ZP610 has been in scheduled service since 2022, the programmes with the Lufthansa Group and Air New Zealand are running, and environmental management under EMAS has been in place since March 2023. AIX 2023 makes this status visible to the entire industry for the first time in years. With the new series, ZIM is also expanding its own Economy offering, while the focus of the business remains on Premium Economy.
